About the Show
Based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew, Godspell is a true
celebration of the life and teachings of Christ. While set in a modern day
setting, the cast will capture the hearts of both young and old as they
celebrate the life and teachings of Christ as given to us in the Bible.
Featuring recognizable songs such as Day By Day, By My Side and many others the
audience members get to see the parables of Jesus Christ come to life.
John Michael Tebelak found the inspiration for Godspell through some personal
experiences and in 1970 produced the first Godspell while attending Carnegie
Mellon University. John Michael left school without graduation and took Godspell
to New York where it was produced at Ellen Stewart's experimental Cafe La Mama
Theatre.
A few producers saw the show and said they would produce it if it had
new songs. They brought in Stephen Schwartz who wrote new songs in 5 weeks and
the show opened May 17, 1971. Soon after the New York opening, "resident"
companies were organized in Boston, Washington, Log Angeles, San Francisco,
Philadelphia, Chicago and Toronto with the intention of playing extended runs of Godspell. The show also enjoyed popularity abroad we well opening in Paris,
London, Amsterdam, Hamburg and Melbourne. After 5 years of attracting sold-out
audiences off-Broadway, Godspell made its way to the 1,200 seat Ambassador
Theatre on Broadway in June, 1976. On September 4, 1977, Godspell ended its run
after 527 performances. In all, the musical achieved more than 2,600
performances both on Broadway and off.
